Stalker Fans (Sasaeng)

Article was first published on Stardom in Korea (My Kpop Blog) 2 years ago (16 August, 2012 @ 22:21:46). I’ve discontinued the blog and imported its content here.

What is Sasaeng fans?

Sasaeng fans are fans who are overly obsessed with their Korean idols and will do anything to get close to them, such as stalking them by car, waiting for them at their home, stealing their phones and social security numbers! Sasaeng fans behavior originated in South Korea because  needless to say most idols live in the country and stalking is only possible when they are in close proximity with their idols. However, as more and more K-pop idols are promoting overseas, you can see a growing number of sasaeng fans not only in South Korea but also countries like Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore and many more!

Elizabeth Soh provides thorough insights on sasaeng fans behavior and activities: Part 1Part 2 & Part 3

What do you think of Sasaeng fans?

As if sasaeng taxis (refer to article part 3 for more information) and breaking into their homes aren’t bad enough, some fans even go to the extent of slapping their idols, send blood written letters (examples can be read here & here) as a way of showing their love and admiration. Have their love turned into burdens for the idols?

To me, all these are far from love and support, they sound much more like a terror instead. Imagine going home from a long day of work only to find strangers waiting in front of your house ready to mob you or worse having them in your house, not knowing how they have entered and refused to leave. JYJ‘s Park Yoochun is a good example for this case, as you can see in the picture above, Yoochun is trying to avoid sasaeng fans without knowing that they were taking pictures of him. How sad is that? Have idolization turned them into criminals for them to act likewise?

Many idols like Yoochun have also been involved in countless car accidents while trying to avoid sasaeng taxisYoochun who has been receiving a huge number of prank calls and slaps from his fans, used twitter to express his frustrations and disappointments in sasaeng’s behavior. Sasaeng fans of his have continuously cause inconvenience, disruptions and dangerous situations not only to him but also his family. Here is what he thinks of his sasaeng fans who installed CCTV in his parking lot (read more here).

Are you one?

Sasaeng fans have created so much distress and hatred in the K-pop community from both the idols and the fans as their behavior is deemed inhumane and bad. Personally, I really despise sasaeng fans behavior for my financial and moral values but is their behavior really far off from the behavior of “regular fans”?

Have you ever asked yourself what kind of fans have you been all these while?

K-pop idols, like everyone else, posses and develop feelings. They are human before anything else and therefore they deserve the rights for privacy and personal space just like everyone else. Unfortunately, many tend to overlook this fact.

So, what is your take?
